My group and I think Evangeline is most appropriate
for the role of the young girl in our music video as her enthusiasm and
confidence will help her express her emotions deeply in video. Moreover, she
will be able to express real love as we are also using her real boyfriend; we
decided to do this as we felt it will enhance Evangeline’s performance majorly
due by it avoiding the awkwardness of her pretending to be in love with someone
other than her boyfriend. Evangeline has a cosy and comfortable presence and
she is very natural and emotional when appropriate which my group and I think
is the essential ingredients to a fantastic music video.
Joe –
Joe is a
tall, smart lad who is immaculate at drama. He is appropriate for the role of
the ex as he is not shy or ashamed to express emotions when needed; he is
humble guy and is the boyfriend of Evangeline. This is effective because an
instant connection can be formed from the two which will reflect very well on
screen. Joe has a soft presence and distinctive facial expressions which is
essential to help portray emotion from the two lovers. He feels comfortable
around Evangeline which we feel will be effective as real love can be shown.
Lily –
My group and I decided to choose Lily to be part of our music video as we feel
that her personality is most appropriate for the role of the ‘home wrecker’ as
we are in need of someone with loads of energy and passion to be the person
that Evangeline catches her boyfriend cheating with in the music video. We feel
that Lily will be the most appropriate girl for our music video as she is a
drama student and is able to play different roles whilst remaining confident.
Lily has a confident personality which will be portrayed effectively in our
music video as her role requires a lot of effort.
Below
is our animatic storyboard, I filmed this and at the same time I had Rihanna –
PS I’m Still Not Over You in the background. I did this so that we will know as
a group when are specific scenes are in relation with the song. We have have
got some of our scenes matching the lyrics at exactly the same time. For
example, we want our main character playing with the boys little brother when
the lyrics say, “How's your mother, how's your little brother?
Does he still look just like you?” This happens a few times in the song and we
think it fits well and is a good idea.
Due to technical difficulties which cannot be fixed, the sound of our song playing over the top of our storyboard cannot be played. Below is an animated version of our story board which was created on an animated storyboard website. This is to give you a better understanding of how our scenes will look like with our song. Due to the website not being exactly what we wanted we had to compramise. We couldn't use in female characters as they only had males but this doesn't represent our actual video. It is also a bit shorter than our original video as it wasn't realistic doing the whole animated video using males. I would recommend watching our storyboard before watching the animated version as you will get a better understanding of our video and then watch the animated version to get a more created idea of how it will look.
The scenes
are typed out just in case it is not purely visible on the storyboard itself.
1st shot -Mid shot. A flash back so the edit of the scene is
black and white to emphasis this. Main female is walking through the park, she
is about to ring her boyfriend, writing his number on her phone dial. 2nd shot -Mid/Long shot. A flash back so the edit of the scene is black and white to emphasis
this. She then presses the call button, and is smiling. 3rd shot -Over the shoulder shot. A flash back so the edit of the scene is black and white to emphasis
this. She looks around in the park and spots her boyfriend with another girl,
the boy has the phone in his hand and can hear his phone ringing but he busies
it and continues to engage in conversation and laughter with the other girl. 4th shot -Close up. Back to contemporary, a close up shot of the girl with tears and her
mascara all smudged running down her face. 5th shot -Side view shot. Shows the girl sitting on her bed trying to write him a
litter. There are loads of letters shattered out to support the lyrics "but
the words don't come out right", suggesting that she has attempted several
times to write a suitable letter to him.
6th shot -Over the shoulder shot. The camera then cuts to the actual letter the girl is writing, and follows a few words she writes "Dear Joe, I miss your smile, laugh, hugs. I just miss everything about you".
7th shot -Long shot. A flash back so the edit of the scene is black and white to emphasis this. The girl and her ex playing with his little brother, we decided to do this scene as it fits in with the lyric "how’s your little brother does he still look just like you?".
8th shot -Close up. Close up shot on the calendar, the girl is crossing down the dates, and there are previous dates crossed out-this is to symbolise the days she hasn't seen him for. the lyric: "but it don't get no better as each days go by".
9th shot -Over the shoulder shot. The female is watching a cheesy love film "The notebook".
11th shot -Long shot. Whilst she is watching the film she can hear her phone ringing from upstairs.
12th shot -Long shot. She quickly runs up the stairs.
13th shot -Mid shot. She runs into her room and jumps onto her bed straight to her phone.
14th shot -Mid shot. She checks her phone and the missed call is not her ex and she whispers underneath her breath "I wish it was him" and sighs.
15th shot -Mid shot. She is lying on her bed crying her eyes out, you can see the phone visible behind her on the bed from where she has chucked it in desperation.
16th shot -Long shot. She gets his jumper and cuddles it tightly to her chest, crying.
17th shot -Mid shot. She puts on his jumper and gets back on her bed.
18th shot -Mid shot. It goes to a flashback of them two and he is wearing the same jumper she is crying in to.
19th shot -Mid shot. It then goes to another flashback of them two when they're younger and are drawing.
20th shot -Long shot. It cuts to another scene of them playing in the trees.
These are the images of the storyboards I done, we are happy with what we have created. We like our ideas and are confident that it should make a good music video which will appeal to our target audience. We think when we are filming we may come up with some new exciting ideas so these may not be all of our ideas. We are hoping we may think of different scenes when we actually start the process of filming our video. With more ideas we will then have our full music video as we haven't came up with enough ideas yet to fully fill the whole length of our selected song. As we go along we are getting more and more ideas so when we begin filming we feel we will know exactly what we want and what will look good in relation to our song/video.
Audience feedback -
The prezi above demonstrates feedback from three peers from our target audience as we felt we needed to see the thoughts from who we are actually trying to get this video to appeal to. We are happy with the feedback they've given us and we will try and incorporate this in our work and think of their comments when we are creating our video.
I and my group carried out a questionnaire and we took a sample of 20 people.
From looking at our results we now have a lot more ideas
for our music video due to our feedback. The majority of our feedback was from
16-18 year old girls which is good as this is our main targeted audience. Many
of the people who took part in our survey selected Pop and R&B as being
their favourite genre's, this is great for us as a group in what we want to do.
This is because Rihanna's main genre of music is both Pop and R&B which was
the most popular.
The majority of our audience watch their music videos on
Television and secondly on their computer.
More people preferred a narrative story music video when
it is telling the story rather than performance based which is from the artist.
This suits with what we wanted to do as we wanted to tell a story in our video
and we was going to make all of it narrative as we felt this was best. After
carrying out the questionnaire we can see that this is in fact the case as it
is more popular towards our targeted audience.
Many of our audience listened to pop music rather than not
with 75% saying they do listen to it and only 25% saying they do not. Rihanna's
main genre of music is pop so this is effective for our work as they should
more than likely enjoy Rihanna's music.
Our question 7 was an open ended question so I write what
feedback we received, with half of our audience saying they liked it. Only 2
people said they didn't enjoy the music and one person saying it was generic.
We have analysed this comment of someone saying it was generic and even though
they are talking about the music and we can't physically change the song we are
going to make our video unique. Four people said it was good and three people
said it was good but they prefer the old stuff for example, what pop music was
like in the 80's. I agree with this statement as I also prefer the pop music
from the 80's so I will be looking at 80's pop music videos and seeing if we
can incorporate this into our video somehow.
A lot of people found question 8 hard to answer which was
asking them what their favourite music video out at the moment was. They found
it hard to think of one but once they thought about it they had one to write
down. Six people said Miley Cyrus - Cannonball was their favourite, I think
this is really good for our ideas for our music video because as Miley's song
is a sad love song so is Rihanna's. Miley's video is sad and she is crying a
lot in it, this is what we want our actress to do in the video as well as we
want a close up of her looking in the camera crying. We can look at the video
Cannonball and see what effects and shots they used to make the audience feel
her pain as it is done in a really good way.
The majority of our audience said they listened to Rihanna
with 16 of them saying yes and only 4 of them saying they didn’t. This shows
that a wide variety of people listen to Rihanna’s music and this video should
appeal to a lot of people.
Our last question asked our audience what is their
favourite Rihanna video and we left it as an open ended question so that they
could pick any song of hers that they wanted. Unfaithful came up as the most
liked video with Take A Bow as second and We Found Love third. We as a group
our going to look at each of these videos and see what they are like and
analyse them thoroughly. This will hopefully give us more ideas for our video
as we haven’t actually fully decided on a beginning, middle and end in our
story as we only have little ideas and nothing is our main idea.
My name is Nuala McKevitt and I am currently studying at St.
Anne’s Catholic High School for Girls. I am writing you this letter to ask your
permission for me to use Rihanna’s song ‘PS I’m Still Not Over You’. This is
for my A2 Media coursework and I will be doing this with my group which
consists of me and two other girls. What we will be doing is using this song
and creating our own video to it as it doesn’t already have a video for this
particular song.
I would be very appreciative if you would agree to letting us
use this song for our work and we will try our very best in creating a great
video for such an excellent song.
Rihanna- P.s
I'm Still Not Over You The scene
commences with a female in her bedroom looking out her window, who is very upset and is trying to write a letter to her ex boyfriend. This will be filmed and will show what she has written down. This letter will be about her explaining that she is
not over her ex, there will be various previous letters scrunched up around her on her bed.
She will then finish writing the letter but then again, she will rip it up as she is in two minds
about sending it.
The next
scene then cuts to a flashback of when the female and her boyfriend would be
around his little brother playing, this will be her reminiscing so to symbolise
that this is something that happened in the past, a black and white effect will
be used. Furthermore, the next scene will be split in four screens and one by
one old video clips/pictures appear of memories of the couple. In the four different screens they will be doing something very different in each and will all be located in different places.
Within the song Rihanna talks about being able to rewind time and how badly she misses him. There will be a calander counting the days since she has seen him, which hasn't just been a few days but several months. The calander will have a marker pen crossing off the days which will symoblise just how much she is missing him and thinks about him every single day.
She then
runs upstairs rapidly locks herself in her room, picks up a jumper (the scene
will then quickly cut to a mid-shot of the male, her ex wearing this jumper)
and cuts back to the female in her room who is clenching tightly onto this
jumper and tears begin to roll down her face.
Clock
slowly rewinds back the time to the first day they met, when they were young
kids and lived round the same area and shows the first time they talked in their local park.
Feedback:
Deniece - WICKED!
Precious - It's good, it's in a lot of detail, the concept is very contemporary
with young people and love which is a good thing. I just don't understand the
beginning part of why she rips the letter.
This is a picture of the mood board we created for
our chosen artist/song. As a group we were stuck on whether to choose Rihanna –
PS I’m Still Not Over You or Adele – He Won’t Go. We got various pictures of
the different ideas we had for each of the videos and we presented them to the
class. We then felt that Rihanna was the better choice as we were more familiar
with her music and although we may have had more ideas for the Adele song we
felt our ideas for the Rihanna song were a lot more effective and would appeal
more to our target audience. Our target audience is teenagers and we felt
Rihanna is an artist that teenagers are attracted to more over Adele’s music.
Feedback –
"I think this mood board looks good and it
seems that you have a lot of different ideas for both of the two songs."
Emma, 17
"The
images used look good and it looks like you will be making a really good music
video." Briony, 17 "I
prefer the Rihanna idea and i think this would make a better music video as she
is particularly loved by your target audience and I would say more popular than
Adele in this age range." John, 18
I
am going to be analysing two very different music videos from the artist Jessie
J. I have chosen to look at Jessie J as she is, like Rihanna, a very successful
female artist who is loved by many. I am going to look at two of her videos
which are Who You Are and It’s My Party, they are extremely different videos as
one is sad and serious whilst the other is more energetic and upbeat.
Jessie J - Who You Are
Throughout the whole video of Jessie J it is mainly her sitting
down looking straight into the camera singing the meaningful lyrics. I think
the meaning of this is to show just how important the lyrics are to her. I
think this is effective and is a good idea when the artist is staring right
into the camera as it then feels like you can feel their emotions. Also as it
is just a simple head shot this is what the audience are particularly focusing
on, you can feel her pain and see how much it means to her. Nearer to the end of the song rain starts pouring all over
Jessie J, I think this is to again show her emotions. Not only is the rain all
over her, it is also all over the room which looks like a hotel. I think it shows
that you shouldn’t let anything stop you which relates back to the lyrics. Analysing the video, I think that it is a very
simplistic video and there isn’t much to it as a whole. Although the video is
very plain I like the idea of this as there isn’t too much going on around her
which allows you to focus on her and the lyrics. In some music videos there is
a lot going on around the artist which makes it hard for you to focus on them,
so this could be a good idea for our music video to make sure there isn’t too
much going on so the audience don’t lose their focus.
Jessie
J - It's My Party
This
song is a lot more upbeat and it is about her not caring what people think
about her and she'll always do her own thing. Jessie J has said this song is
about how she feels about her life currently. By looking at the lyrics I feel
it is about how she feels about peoples criticisms towards not just her but
also her music too. This music video has a lot more vibrant colours used in it
and Jessie J does not look anywhere near as serious as she does in Who You Are.
She is joking around in the video with her lyrics and having a laugh with them.
Even the surroundings of the video is a lot more electric and has a party vibe
to the song.
Analysing the video I like
how quick the cutting rate is and I think this is also useful for our video.
This will be a good idea for our video and we can use this in the flashback
scenes of the couple. The fast cutting rate will entice our target audience and
make them want to carry on watching the video. So although the song is very
different to our chosen song of Rihanna - PS I'm Still Not Over You we can
still take ideas from the video to see on the creating of our video.
In what
ways are the traditional aspects of the hip-hop genre broken or remade in the
music video for “99 problems”?
Jay Z is an American rapper and 99 Problems was the third
single to be released by him, this was released in 2004. This video is mainly shot in Brooklyn, New York which is situated
where Jay Z grew up and in it Jay Z is talking about dealing with racial
summarising from a police officer who wants to search his car, dealing with an
attacker and dealing with rap knockers.
Jay Z says himself that he usually has girls in his videos
but this is more cinematic which is very different from the stuff he usually
produces. This breaks the traditional rap music video concept and this was
loved but also hated.
In most rap videos there is a lot of wealth involved which is
shown through expensive cars, jewellery, items of clothing, shoes, etc. But this
is the opposite in the 99 Problems video and there is quite a bit of poverty
shown. There is a little boy within the video who looks very innocent and looks
like he is suffering from poverty. He then pulls down his hat which is actually
a balaclava, this indicates that he is going to go and commit a crime. Which
also emphasises the fact that a lot of people may be led to life of crime due
to the circumstances they are brought up in.
A prime example of a traditional rap video is Snoop Dogg ft.
Pharrell Williams, Drop It Like It’s Hot. This video fits all of the
stereotypical requirements in a rap video of the fancy trainers, expensive
jewellery with a lot of bling and girls dancing in revealing clothes. This is a
perfect example to show just how different Jay Z’s video to 99 Problems
actually is. Mark Romanek who directed this video wanted to put energy
within the video which is usually used in Rock videos. This is what Rap videos
usually don’t consist of and this was one of the main differences compared to the
stereotypical rap videos. Another main difference is the fact that Jay Z’s
video is in black and white, not many rap videos are in black and white as the vast
majority of them are in colour. This was a hugely debated video
and the main reason for this was that in this video Jay Z gets shot and this
caused a lot of controversy. Many companies couldn’t show this video because of
the gun crime within the video as they do not agree with showing violent
content. Jay Z said if they didn’t show him getting shot in the video then they
wasn’t allowed to show the video at all and he stuck by this decision. Due to this, on MTV every singly
airing of this video would have an introduction of John Norris explaining why
they would be showing the video unedited. As well as this Jay Z made an
introduction for BET explaining the shooting within the video is representing
the death of Jay Z and the rebirth of Shawn Carter. It also faced controversy
over the fact that in the video there has dog fighting; this was criticized by
the Humane Society of the United States.
This video was directed by Mark
Romanek and was nominated for various awards, such as MVPA awards in 2005 and
of which won three of them. It also won MTV Video Music Awards for Best
Director, Best Editing, and Best Cinematography. It also got nominations for
Best Male Video and Video of the Year.
There are many differences from
the usual hip-hop genre in this video and various things from within the video
are broken. But there is also still the same sort of aspects of a rap video
included in this video. There are various expensive chains and shown in the
video and also the dancing involved in this video fits the criteria. The
dancing in this video is break dancing which is probably the stereotypical dancing
you think you’d see in a rap video.
In conclusion, this video is
extremely different from previous hip-hop and rap videos. There are various
ways in which it has been re-made and this is what has made it a very
controversial video amongst people. I personally like the video and how it is
very different from the other rap videos and I think it was directed in a
really good way by Mark Romanek. The ideas that were used in this video were
really good and made an exciting music video.
Alot of this video is performance rather than narrative and the musicians are used in this video mainly, which differs from there usual videos. But there is a clear line between the two.
The clothes worn in this video are black and white, which matches the scene of the video.
The overall style of the video is quite edgy/rocky and it has quite a sad vibe to it.
The band is trying to represent death in a way and it portrays a sad image.
I think this appeals to teenagers and young adults, as The Script are a very popular band amongst teenagers but the message of this video is more aimed towards young adults. It attracts both males and females and also all sorts of races.
I think this video is very important in the marketing of the band as it will draw people in and get them an even bigger fan base.
Disclosure -
All of this video is performance based and there are two main people throughout the whole video.
Locations are very broad and there are many different places used in this video and the colours are vibrant. They are wearing everyday normal clothes which I think is a good idea as it shows that it is just casual and this represents what a lot of people may wear on a normal day to day basis.
The overall style of the video is simplistic but effective. It is a laid back video but is also very exciting.
The artists of this video are trying to represent a relationship within this video and the two main actors emphasise this throughout the video.
I think this video is trying to appeal to teenagers as the quirky video is something that would entice people of this age. It appeals to both genders and all races.
I think this video is important to the marketing of the band as it will promote them. But not majorly as they aren't actually in the music video and we don't get an idea of what they are actually like.
Example -
A lot of this video is performance rather than narrative and there is a clear line shown between the two.
The colours in this video are quite bright and exciting colours. There aren't many different locations and they are all based in different rooms of a house. The clothes are casual clothes that people would wear everyday.
The overall style of the video is
This artist is trying to represent a relationship but in a clever way. I really like how the split scenes are used in this video and I think it is a very clever way to show a relationship.
The video is trying to appeal to teenagers and young adults who are interested in Example's music. I would say the video is more aimed at females as they are more interested in the relationship aspect and it would appeal to them more.
The video is important in marketing Example as it shows what kind of character he is and fan bases of an artist love to see this.
Natalie Imbruglia -
A lot of this video is performance based by Natalie Imbruglia.
There isn't a wide range of locations used and the majority is in the same room in a house. The clothes worn are very casual and the colours used are quite dull. This is the same throughout the video and the style of the video is quite relaxed but also shows an important message.
The artist is trying to represent a broken relationship and this is emphasised in the title of "torn".
I think this video appeals to females due to the storyline of it and mainly to young adults.
The video is very important to the song as it emphasises the title and is a significant part of the song.
The Kooks -
This video is performance based with the band performing the song throughout.
The location of this video is mainly by a pool, and the band are wearing casual indie clothes.
The overall style is casual and it is an indie kind of video. The band is trying to present an image of how the girl is different to other girls.
I think it appeals to boys mainly as the storyline is more realistic to males and they will be fond of the idea of the video.
How much of the video is narrative and how
much is performance? Is there a clear line between the two?
In what ways are these used in the video: clothes, locations and colours? – Connotation and denotation
What is the overall style of the video?
What image is the band artist trying to represent?
What kind of audience do you think the video is trying to appeal to? Gender,
age, race,
how important do you think the video is in the marketing of the artist/band?
